Used Book Sales to raise money in support of our library
The Friends collect books for two sales during the year: Mother's Day Sale (Friday and Saturday before Mother's Day) and the larger Fall Sale is usually Saturday-Thursday beginning the last weekend in September. The 2013 FALL BOOK SALE IS INDEFINITELY POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. Please feel free to check back with the Library for any new updates on times and places for the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Books are also on sale at the library on the upper level.
Books for Babies to introduce books and reading to new parents
This project gives every new mother birthing at Wilkes Regional Medical Center a packet containing a sturdy board book, information on the library, and information on ''Ten reasons to read to your baby''. This project in funded in part by Wilkes Pediatrics.
Programming to serve the community and increase patronage
The Friends sponsor author visits, displays, and other special events in the Friends of the Library meeting room. In past years programs have included a Poetry Festival, a Latino Festival, visiting authors and Summer Reading programs for children. We are grateful to the Kulynych Family Foundation for its contributions to the summer events for children and youth. The Annual Dinner Meeting, the last Sunday in October 2013, is our preeminent program for our members, featuring guest speakers and the election of officers.
Volunteer Opportunities to enhance library programming
Our annual gift to the library provides funds in support of programming for children and adults, and other items not covered in the library's regular budget. Funds raised during our book sales are the main source for the Friends' financial support of the library. Volunteers are vital to our book sales' success - collecting, moving, sorting and pricing donated materials is the work behind the scenes while others sell during the sales. Volunteer needs in support of special events are: baking refreshments, selling t-shirts or bags, working at the actual book sales, taking tickets, helping with mailings, writing grants, preparing publicity. Let us know what skills or talents you would like to offer!
Book Donations to support the book sales
Public donations are crucial for our sales; we resell books, video and audio cassettes, and DVDs. Donations can be delivered directly to the library.
Staff Development in support of an educated, enthusiastic staff
Staff members wishing to further their education in the library field may seek approval from the County Librarian to take a course or attend a conference and have the cost reimbursed by the Friends.
